If you're heading all the way to Birdsville then why not make a week
of it because the trip to Birdsville promises to be as eventful as the
races themselves
Innamincka Picnic Races & Gymkhana
Whilst not attracting the crowds likes its big brother the Birdsville Races
the Innamincka races certainly has its own uniqueness.
Held the weekend prior to the Birdsville races (Saturday 30th
& Sunday 31st August 2008) the races attract the local characters,
hack horses and some brilliant local riders for the Gymkhana.
While your there try a spot of fishing on the magnificent Cooper Creek.
Quilpie Opal Festival & 'Kangaranga Do' Street Party
Quilpie hosts its Opal Festival on the 28th, 29th and 30th August with
stunning displays of Australian Opal. Australia produces the best opal
in the world and for three days you have the opportunity to view and buy
these exquisite gems. The Opal Festival concludes with the Karangaranga
Do Street party being held on the night of Tuesday 2nd September. The 'Karangaranga
Do' is packed with novelty Outback events. Test your stamina and
strength in the wool bale rolling competition, or grab 3 of your mates
for a chance to win a piece of the $10,000 prize money in the 'rocks
off' boulder throwing competition.Live band, bar and food stalls
operating throughout the night. The 'Karangaranga Do' promises to be a
great way to get into the outback spirit. Free entry to both the Opal
Festival and Karangaranga Do Street party.

Windorah International Yabby Races
On Wednesday, 3rd September 2008, it's Windorah's night for a party. Have a
ball at the Windorah International Yabby Races at the Western Star Hotel.
By the end of the night you may be leading your yabby around the winners
circle. The racing is held on the bitumen in the main street in front of
the Western Star Hotel.
